Delhi Dreaming is an exciting project involving all kinds of theatre artists from both India and Australia. Artistic Director, Angela Chaplin was resident at Imago Media, New Delhi, for three months in 2004 on an Asialink Fellowship. As part of her residency Angela and a group of actors translated John Gay’s timeless classic, The Beggar’s Opera, into Hindi and set it in contemporary New Delhi with new “Bollywood” songs, choreography and music. This became Delhi Dreaming. Taking advantage of being a theatre company on the Indian Ocean deckchair theatre is developing a truly bi-cultural production of this exciting work. We will join with Teamwork Productions (India) to create a production that will tour Australia and India and be performed in English and Hindi or Hinglish as it is commonly known. Using Indian and Australian actors as well as a creative team of Indian and Australian designers, choreographers and composers, Delhi Dreaming will achieve cross-cultural exchange on a level that has never been seen between the two countries before.
