The Altar Boyz...a Christian boyband...at Connections Nightclub...not something that you might expect?
Don’t worry, its not a REAL Christian boyband, and they’re not REALLY trying to convert you – Altar Boyz is an award winning comedy musical that is performing at Connections for four shows in September.
For those who can remember the boyband phenomenon of the nineties, and even for those who’d rather forget - give thanks to the Lord because the Altar Boyz are here, saving souls and spreading the word while adhering religiously to the sacred commandments of the boyband creed. Altar Boyz is a hilarious spoof about a fictitious Christian boyband on their last stop of their national "Raise the Praise" tour. The show satirizes the boyband phenomenon and nicely puts humour to religion without ever skewering faith.
The Boyz are five ultra-talented heart throbs. Matthew - the leader of the pack with the heart of a saint; Mark - a sensitive young man with deep faith in Cher; Luke - the wild one with a strong “interest” in communion wine; Juan - an orphan, searching for his parents, who also has an eye for all the girls in the audience; and Abraham - a nice Jewish boy from the Temple down the street, who’s not quite sure how he ended up in the band anyway.
The concert progresses with the audience members cast as fans in attendance at the first Perth gig for the Boyz, who will do whatever it takes to bring them into the light of true belief, all the while being checked by the Sony Soul Sensor DX-12 - a magical machine at the corner of the stage that registers the number of still unsaved souls in the audience. The Altar Boyz won't quit until it's down to zero. And start heading towards zero it does, until a blip in the plan suddenly appears and we discover all is not as it seems with some of the Boyz...Will they make it through this final show and get the Soul Sensor down to zero? Or are the lessons they’re learning tonight about themselves and each other going to outweigh that?
Including such songs as “Jesus Called Me On My Cellphone” and “Something About You (Girl, You Make Me Wanna Wait)”, Altar Boyz promises to appeal to all ages, all generations, and all denominations.
Conceived by Marc Kessler and Ken Davenport, with a book by Kevin Del Aguila and music and lyrics by Gary Adler and Michael Patrick Walker, the original Off Broadway production of Altar Boyz ran for over 2000 performances and was the winner of the 2005 Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical and the winner of the 2006 & 2007 Broadway.com Audience Favorite Award. The original Australian production was also invited to be a part of the World Youth Day celebrations in Sydney in 2008.
Altar Boyz will be running at Connections Nightclub for 4 shows only, from Wednesday September 21 to Saturday September 24. All tickets are $15 and are general admission. Doors open at 7pm and each show starts at 7.30pm. The club’s bar will be open before, during and after the show, and feel free to stay around after the show to meet and have a drink with the cast.
