Carmen
Melbourne Opera
Robert Blackwood Hall
Saturday 26 November 7.30pm
A staged performance in English of the world’s most popular opera Carmen to mark the fortieth anniversary of the Robert Blackwood Hall. One performance only; over 100 performers on stage.
Carmen is an unforgettable tragedy of shocking and risque morality, set to a fiery, colorful score infused with the pulsing sensuality of gypsy and Spanish influenced melodies. The smoldering gypsy seductress, Carmen, is foresworn to freedom, she can be embraced, but never possessed. A casual, flirtatious dalliance when mixed with jealousy and obsession becomes a deadly game… Directed by Hugh Halliday, Melbourne Opera’s new production promises to be energetic, colourful, and full of passion, with the stunning Dimity Shepherd as Carmen, joined by the magnificent dramatic tenor Jason Wasley as her doomed lover Don Jose. The glamorous Toreador will be played by charismatic baritone Simon Meadows.
