Modern musical is Figaro with a Twist
Noted theatre director Rachel McDonald combines her considerable talents with those of the classical singing graduates from the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) in a performance of the comic opera Susanna's Wedding.
This modern musical - which is showing at Don Russell Performing Arts Centre on Friday 10 June at 8pm - is a brand new take on Mozart's masterpiece, The Marriage of Figaro.
Susanna wants to get married. Her sleazy boss (the Count) has other ideas. And her jealous fiancé (head of the servant-staff) wants revenge. Meanwhile, the boss’ wife wants her husband back, and an oversexed teenager wants her. Behind every door, the company spy is listening.
It is up to Susanna to outwit the lot of them and shoot for a happy ending but it’s not going to be easy if she wants to keep her job.
Susanna’s Wedding is a sparkling new Australian musical featuring nine up-and-coming stars from WAAPA including Matthew Gollow, Ryan Sharp, Caris Doyle, Gabrielle Jack, Claire Condipodero, Lydia Killerby, Leah Guelfi, Evan Pugh and Shaunna Powell.
Pianist David Wickam accompanies them live on stage where they perform some of Mozart’s greatest hits with plenty of laughs, a crazy plot, and some of the most sublime music ever written.
Rachel McDonald, who also wrote the show, has a long list of directorial credits including productions for Opera Australia, West Australian Opera, Sydney Theatre Company, Company B Belvoir, Musica Viva, the ABC, WAAPA, and a recent sold out performance of The Rake’s Progress at the Heath Ledger Theatre.
The Academy, as it is affectionately known, has produced many famous graduates such as Hugh Jackman, Lisa McCune, Frances O’Connor, William McInnes, Marcus Graham, Tim Minchin, Eddie Perfect and Cassie Davis.
It continues to produce graduates of the highest calibre including Lucy Durack of Wicked, rising star of Melbourne Theatre Company’s Richard III Ewen Leslie and emerging director Matthew Lutton.
