It was formed in 1935 as The Gilbert & Sullivan Society of Victoria to foster and promote the works of W.S. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan, as well as other authors of light opera. We have presented light operas in Melbourne and Victoria every year, through war, depression, and global warming, ever since. This year we commemorate the 100th anniversary of W.S. Gilbert’s heroic death in 1911, at his home in Grim’s Dyke, near London, attempting to save a maiden in distress. Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan. Its enormous success led to their first full-length opera – The Sorcerer and then to one of the most successful collaborations in the history of the theatre. We present these two wonderful light operas together in an evening of romance and magic. Trial by Jury is a romp through Victorian law, with a jilted bride suing the dastardly defendant, in the courtroom of a susceptible Judge and Jury who sympathise with both sides! So he engages a dealer in magic and spells to spike the drinks at his betrothal party with hilarious and unexpected results.
