Disney's Aladdin Jr

After just two years, this addition to our theatre season, in which the impressively talented young singers and actors in Years 5 and 6 get to strut their own stuff, has become an enjoyable way to end the school year. Boys and girls (and adults too) will love this year's offering, with its many exciting escapades, funny lines and tuneful songs. Aladdin is a version for junior performers of the famous Disney musical that began its life as a phenomenally successful film in 1992. Based on one of the exotic tales from The Arabian Nights, the story of Aladdin and his lamp is known to all, and has been re-invented numerous times, but perhaps never more enjoyably than in this musical rendition, with music by Alan Menken (The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast) and punchy lyrics by Sir Tim Rice (Jesus Christ Superstar, Evita, Chess). So the adventures of Aladdin and his fortunate Genie (magically set free by chance) are bound to engage us once again, as the youngster struggles for acceptance and self-respect in an especially contemporary take on the original material. Menken's score is a toe-tapper and won two Academy Awards, one for best song (A Whole New World), and one for best musical score.
