Perth Theatre Trust and Perth Concert Hall presents
VIENNA PHILHARMONIC ORCHESTRA
PERTH CONCERT HALL
THURSDAY 29 SEPTEMBER and FRIDAY 30 SEPTEMBER, 2011, 8pm
Conducted by CHRISTOPH ESCHENBACH
“... The sound of this orchestra simply is extraordinary, wherever it plays” THE TELEGRAPH, LONDON
Internationally recognised as one of the world’s greatest orchestras, this is a truly unique opportunity to hear these performances in Australia’s finest acoustic. The Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra stands as a musical force that has become legendary and has set the benchmark against which other orchestras’ measure.
CONDUCTOR CHRISTOPH ESCHENBACH
“But when the cellos played the introduction with such richly textured feeling and Eschenbach awakened the following salvo with a jolt, you knew. This was an edge-of-your-seat performance…” LOS ANGELES TIMES
Christoph Eschenbach, not content with his standing as an accomplished pianist of the Twentieth Century, has also established himself as one of the most influential conductors in a career that has led to his appearances with the world’s great orchestras. At home in front of the Philadelphia and Houston Symphony Orchestras, he now holds the post of Music Director with the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington. A guest of the Chicago Symphony, Los Angeles and New York Philharmonic Orchestras his musical influence across the US pervades that landscape and its great ensembles. Eschenbach is equally at home conducting the great orchestras of Europe whether it be the Orchestre de Paris, the Dresden Staatskapelle or the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. It is no surprise that the great Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra has chosen him to lead them in this their first national tour of Australia. Eschenbach continues his distinguished career as a pianist working regularly with the renowned baritone Matthias Goerne. Audiences will be delighted to learn that Goerne will join the tour to perform Mahler’s ‘Des Knaben Wunderhorn’.
SOLOIST BARITONE MATTHIAS GOERNE
In addition to immersing themselves in the music of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra, audiences will enjoy Matthias Goerne’s first tour of Australia and experience the magic that comes from the voice of one of the leading baritones of the concert stage. Described by the Chicago Sun Times as “… perhaps the greatest lieder singer of today.” Goerne’s performance in Perth promises to electrify the second program. Highly praised for his warm, fluid baritone voice and his profound interpretations, Matthias Goerne is one of the most internationally sought-after vocalists.
“A Master of song, Operating at full Power. If there is one quality that distinguishes Matthias Goerne’s singing - apart from the rich, large sound of his baritone - it is his ability both to create and to inhabit the emotional world a song describes.” THE NEW YORK TIMES
PROGRAM
THURSDAY 29 SEPTEMBER, 8pm
BRAHMS Tragic Overture
MOZART Symphony, No.34 KV 338
BRUCKNER Symphony No. 4
The lives of Schubert, Mahler and Beethoven like that of Brahms, Mozart and Bruckner are spiritually linked to the city of Vienna in which they all lived and worked. What more fitting composers can there be to feature in this first national Australian tour by the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra? These great composers live on through their music, in Brahms dramatic Tragic Overture, and Mozart’s uplifting Symphony No.34 in C KV338. Bruckner’s 4th Symphony is indelibly linked to the history of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. Described by Sir Simon Rattle as “…enormously majestic and grand.” This sweeping work of vast breadth and colour will engulf your senses. In the hands of these great musicians experience Bruckner like never before.
FRIDAY 30 SEPTEMBER, 8pm
SCHUBERT h-minor Symphony‚‘Unfinished‘
MAHLER Des Knaben Wunderhorn featuring Baritone Matthias Goerne
BEETHOVEN Symphony No. 8
Schubert’s beloved Unfinished Symphony with its delicious melodies and rich emotion opens this beautiful program. This great work stands within a realm that is perfectly balanced with the selection of Mahler’s masterful songs from Des Knaben Wunderhorn performed by Baritone Matthias Goerne. Beethoven’s Eighth Symphony joyously completes the evening’s performance and sets the stage for the powerful program that follows.
