THE RETURN Monash University is pleased to present Theatre Nottle’s much-lauded performance of 'The Return”, based on Bertolt Brecht’s epic poem “Legend of the Dead Soldier'. The Return focuses on a bizarre odyssey through human life. When a loving father is senselessly killed at war, his grieving family seek solace in elevating his memory to that of a hero. From questioning the concepts of life and war, The Return, through its use of minimal and striking visual imagery focuses on how to live happily when wars are unceasing in society. The Return evokes the universal sympathy of human life utilising various theatrical languages such as physical theatre, mime and music. Theatre Nottle/Tony Yap Monash residency Monash University Academy of Performing Arts’ Catalyst Residency Program is a new initiative in 2011 and will consist of a theatre related residency on the Monash University Clayton Campus from Aug 22-Sept 8. The Tony Yap Company undertake a creative development project with Korean Theatre Company, Theatre Nottle featuring the concept of Kekkai- or sacred space. The support of this project by the Academy aims to assist the creative development and output of artistic companies and artists as well as create opportunities for interaction, academic engagement and align research. The involvement of the students of the Centre for Theatre and Performance provides a unique opportunity to influence the next generation of theatre makers through the research, writing and engagement with contemporary theatre practice. For students, this is a rare opportunity to access professional process, to work though the ideas independently, and observe and engage in the reality of a cross-cultural development of artistic practice. These artists are articulate about their work, ideas and exploration. The opportunity to engage with artists of this calibre will enhance the learning experience of students, make real their own study and influence their future creative life.
