Carmina Burana presented by Melbourne Symphony Orchestra at the Robert Blackwood Hall Friday 24th June – 8pm Jakub Hrusa Conductor Simon Trpčeski Piano Hye-Seoung Kwan Soprano Paul McMahon Tenor José Carbo Baritone Melbourne Symphony Orchestra Chorus Jonathan Grieves-Smith Chorus master Rachmaninov Piano Concerto No.1 Orff Carmina Burana 'An attraction of magical force,' is how composer Carl Orff felt when he discovered the book of 13th century verse Carmina Burana in the early 1930s. From its 320 verses, Orff chose 23 to create a powerful, primal, pulsating picture of medieval life, a ‘scenic cantata’ celebrating nature, chivalry, courtly love, sex and, not least, the pleasures of the grape. As popular with advertising agencies as it is with concert audiences, Carmina Burana features three vocal soloists and the full MSO Chorus under the dynamic direction of Czech maestro Jakub Hrusa. The Orchestra also welcomes back Macedonian-born pianist Simon Trpčeski for the power and passion of Rachmaninov's first Piano Concerto.
