RELATIONSHIPS are tested and emotions run wild in MATES Theatre Society’s current production, the Elizabeth Coleman comedy Secret Bridesmaid’s Business with opens at the Birkdale School of Arts Hall on 8TH April.
Set on the night before Meg Bacon’s wedding to her fiancé James; she has come together with her mother and bridesmaid’s as the final hours before the big day tick down.
However, there is trouble looming in the form of a scandal that is set to rock the very foundation that marriage is built upon – trust.
The scandal places Meg’s bridesmaid’s Lucy and Angela (played by Mekila Lammas and Lucy Moxon) in an unenviable position; do they allow their friend to marry her cheating fiancé, or do they tell Meg what they know and hope that she doesn’t shoot the messenger.
Secret Bridesmaid’s Business is being directed by Marnie Went, and the emotional rollercoaster ride presented in this Elizabeth Coleman script led Marnie to fall in love with the story, “Secret Bridesmaid’s Business gives people the opportunity to showcase some real, raw emotions”, Marnie said.
“I love the lines in the play and the dynamics of the relationships amongst the girls”, continued Marnie.
The cast of six in Secret Bridesmaid’s Business are playing normal everyday people - which is a challenge in itself; however each character is also having their own emotional struggle which will be conveyed to audiences in such a way that Marnie hopes the audience will compare themselves with the characters, and consider what they would do in a similar situation.
“As the director, my role is to extract those emotions and ensure that the cast take the audience through the dramatic rhythm of the play”, explained Marnie.
“I am excited to be working with a great script and even more excited about those who have been cast in the production”, enthused Marnie.
Playing the bride in this very funny comedy is theatre newcomer Shelley Sturla, and Marnie was encouraged by the possibility of casting Shelley in the role of Meg Bacon, “for someone quite new to theatre she brings some natural talent”, explained Marnie who appeared alongside Shelley in MATES Theatre Society’s production Jest Call Me Cowboy in November last year.
MATES Theatre Society’s three week season commences on Friday, 8TH April, and following the group’s gala season opener a few weeks ago at the Redland’s Performing Arts Centre they return to the Birkdale School of Arts Hall where performances of Secret Bridesmaid’s Business take place in a relaxed theatre-restaurant setting with a licensed bar and a light supper server at interval.
MATES Theatre Society look forward to welcoming you and your friends to a performance of Secret Bridesmaid’s Business – with witty lines and fun-filled characters audiences will be captivated by how the story unfolds.
