Susan (who initially calls herself Rita) becomes dissatisfied with the routine of her life. In an attempt to re-evaluate her inner self, she signs up for an Open University course in English Literature.
The play opens as 'Rita' meets her tutor, Frank for the first time. Dr Frank Bryant is a middle-aged, bitter, alcoholic career academic who has taken on the tutorship to pay for his drink. While the two have an immediate and profound effect on one another, and their meeting brings positive changes to their personalities, Frank’s bitterness and cynicism return as he notices Susan beginning to adopt the pretensions of the University culture he despises. Educating Rita is somewhat funny, somewhat sad and extremely educational. If it doesn’t make you think about your own path in life, nothing will.
