Blak Yak brings Holmes to Kalamunda
Kalamunda Dramatic Society (KADS) and Blak Yak Theatre proudly co-present the comedy Sherlock Holmes and the First English Gentleman, opening to audiences at the Town Square Theatre in Kalamunda on May 6.
Written by Canadian playwright Doug Warwick and directed by Tim Edwards, the famed fictional detective and Dr Watson unravel the mystery of the Plateau Man.
The play draws its inspiration from the accidental discovery of a supposed prehistoric “missing link” between man and ape in 1908. Known as the Piltdown Man, it was one of the greatest scientific hoaxes ever devised and fully debunked in 1953.
It’s anything but elementary as we follow Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson as they gather clues in this adventure mystery, complete with false alarms and red herrings.
Will Sherlock Holmes be seduced by the alluring Lady Adamson? Are the powers of Sherlock Holmes on the wane? Who is planning to steal the famous Star of Delhi housed in the British Museum? Why is Sherlock imprisoned?
Is it of any significance that Alfie Trotwood and Lady Adamson share the same birth date? What is Lady Adamson's connection to Professor Moriarty, and finally, is Professor Moriarty behind it all. Is the game up, or "the game is afoot!"
Director Tim Edwards says he found the script by accident while looking for information about the 2009 film with Robert Downey Jr.
“After reading it, I thought ‘This is the kind of play I like directing - it’s something a little different from the norm’,” he said.
“Sherlock Holmes and the First English Gentleman will not be what the audience is expecting.
“It's not too serious and has some pretty cheesy jokes. But it’s also a lot of fun.”
Sherlock Holmes and the First English Gentleman has slight drug references and will perform a four-week season at the Town Square Theatre home of KADS on May 6, 7, 11, 13, 14, 18, 20, 21, 25, 27 and 28. Tickets are available from O’Hara’s Pharmacy on Haynes St or by phone 9293 1412.
