Slapstick comedy, acrobatics, juggling, hula-hooping and balancing acts form a riotous combination in the school holidays show To the Rescue, at Don Russell Performing Arts Centre on Thursday 30 September at 11am and 1pm.
To the Rescue, performed by globetrotting local duo Pinstripe Circus, is a celebration of the Western Australian affinity with the sun, the sand and the surf.
It tells a rollicking 1920’s seaside story filled with dashing heroes, diabolical villains and charming damsels.
Charlie Chaplin and the golden age of silent movies inspired the style and the content of the show.
The Western Australian Maritime Museum commissioned Pinstripe Circus to create To the Rescue in 2007, the year it celebrated 100 years of surf lifesaving in Australia, to accompany its exhibition Between the Flags.
The success of the show has lead to its current world tour which comprises performances at eight international festivals including the World Expo in Shanghai.
Its first shows back in Perth following the tour are at The Don.
Pinstripe Circus founders Ross Vegas and Ella Mental are regulars at the Fremantle Street Arts Festival and at the Ord River Muster, where they have been on the same bill as Marcia Hines and Jimmy Barnes.
Vegas is a founding member of acclaimed circus troupe Bizircus and has been performing, writing and directing circus shows for the last 18 years. He has trained with Friche Theatre Urbain, a renowned street performance troupe in Paris. He is also a trainer at the WA Circus School and at the Sand Fly Circus in Broome.
Ella Mental studied physical theatre at the University of Western Australia and at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. She has worked with Black Swan State Theatre Company and Barking Gecko Theatre Company.
To the Rescue is a family show that is ideally suited for children aged between five and 12 years old.
Admission is $11 and $10 for groups of 10 or more.
