Details

Mistaken identity leads to Comedy of Errors The 30th birthday of the State’s peak training institute for the entertainment industry, the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA), will be celebrated with the broader community when its anniversary production The Comedy of Errors visits Don Russell Performing Arts Centre on Saturday, 28 August at 8pm. This delightful Shakespearean jewel about mistaken identities and dewy-eyed lovers has a cast of 17 final year WAAPA students, some destined to be future stars on the Australian stage and screen. Direction of the play is from the top shelf with State Theatre Company of South Australia Artistic Director Adam Cook taking the reins. The Comedy of Errors is Shakespeare’s shortest and arguably funniest play, and is an unashamed farce. It is tightly constructed and full of hilarious slap-stick moments delivered at an accelerated pace. When two sets of identical twins find themselves in the bustling city of Ephesus, a series of mistaken identities lead to wild mishaps, wrongful beatings, theft, madness, and even demonic possession. The Academy, as it is affectionately known, has produced many famous graduates such as Hugh Jackman, Lisa McCune, Frances O’Connor, William McInnes, Marcus Graham, Tim Minchin, Eddie Perfect and Cassie Davis. It continues to produce graduates of the highest calibre including Lucy Durack of Wicked, rising star of Melbourne Theatre Company’s Richard III Ewen Leslie and emerging director Matthew Lutton. Admission is $24.70 standard, $21.10 concession and $18.00 for students or groups of 10 or more.
