Tickets are now on sale for Picton Theatre Group’s “The importance of being Earnest, A Trivial Comedy for Serious People”, a play by Oscar Wilde, which open June 12th in Picton. Peformed around the world for over 100 years, the play is set in England during the late Victorian era, the play's humour derives in part from characters maintaining fictitious identities to escape unwelcome social obligations.
It is replete with witty dialogue and mocks what Oscar Wilde saw as the hypocrisy of late Victorian society. It has proved Wilde's most enduringly popular play, first opening in 1895, it’s humour timeless, and although successful, it was his last play.
All is going well for Jack, that is, until he meets the girl of his dreams, attracts the attention of her domineering upper-class Aunty, Lady Bracknell, and of his irresponsible friend Algy, who finds out about Jack’s ‘double life’. Things quickly unravel for Jack and the audience won’t know whether to pity, or laugh, at Jack & his efforts to find happiness in a society that values conformity above both happiness and honesty.
All shows are BYO & the evening shows at 8pm also include the option of PTG’s now famous 2 course dinner show package commencing at 6.30pm.
