Dating in a Disposable World is a 21st century cabaret which explores life, love, heartbreak and outrageously high romantic expectations in our hedonistic world. Inspired by the Inuit myth Skeleton Woman, this show explores the hopes for permanence in relationship and sustainability in love, through theatre and song. Click here to meet the characters.

Dating in a Disposable World includes original songs written by Zalia Joi, Rod Christian, David Hyams, and Stardust & Heaven, as well as the KISS classic, I Was Made For Loving You and a contemporary interpretation of Purcell’s Dido’s Lament.

“My goal is to create inspirational pieces that are entertaining and transformational, helping to lift the spirit of our community,” says writer and performer Joi. “My wish is that the people who come and see the show can be stimulated on some level to love themselves and their loved ones just that little bit more… to help people question what love really is, and when love seems to fade how to let go easily.”

“I have had the great fortune of collaborating with some extraordinary creatives on this project and that is what I live for… creating and communicating that which touches and moves people.”

Dating in a Disposable World first premiered Downstairs at His Maj in 2009. This special fundraising show sees all funds going directly to aiding the production’s tour to the Toronto Fringe Festival in July.

Zalia Joi has trained in theatre (Curtin University), music (WAAPA), and musical theatre (WAAPA), appearing in many theatre productions and short films in her career. Joi performed singing telegrams for 11 years and has busked around Australia. Currently Zalia is part of a new documentary Scene 12, focusing on 12 Perth Actors taking the journey of self discovery through the medium of film as they travel across the world in pursuit of their dreams.

In July Dating in a Disposable World will be performed at the Toronto Fringe Festival. In 2009 the Festival hosted over 150 theatre companies from around the globe with over 800 artists. Previous productions from Perth have seen much success at the Fringe Festival, including Allan Girod’s performance of The Good Thief (2009) by Conor McPherson.
