As presented on Broadway by New York Shakespeare Festival Joseph Papp, Producer Directed by Wilford Leach Musical Adaptation by William Elliot Choreography by Graciela Daniele By arrangement with Hal Leonard Australia Pty Ltd Exclusive agent for Music Theatre International (NY) In May 2010, join the rollicking band of the Pirates of Penzance, (who will never hurt an orphan because they know what it is like!) and the dutiful Frederic, whose birthday on February 29 causes him all manner of grief, as they seek to win Major Stanley's bevy of beautiful daughters in a tale of love, larceny and leap year! The Society presents the Broadway production of this hilarious G&S classic! Re-imagined as a little boy’s dream, this innovative new production of Pirates leaps and bounds from scene to scene with Looney Tunes abandon. Starring as Young Freddie is AFI nominated Tom Russell, who appeared in the file Last Ride with Hugo Weaving. Bound as an apprentice to a life of piracy until his twenty-first birthday (on account of his nursemaid being hard of hearing), Frederic is finally released to shore and falls madly in love with Mabel, Major General Stanley’s knee-shakingly beautiful daughter. But with a birthday that falls on the fateful twenty-ninth day of February, his contractual obligations to the piratical band are somewhat confusing. A slave to his sense of duty, Frederic finds himself in a position of personal and romantic peril. Suffice it to say every boy gets his girl, but not before we meet a trio of Broadway belting belles, a score of bravery-challenged policemen, the whale that swallowed a Major General, a tombstone ballet and one very large octopus. In 2010 G&S will be donating two dollars from every ticket sold to the Royal Flying Doctor Service, continuing their community partnership with the this life saving team.
