HARBOUR THEATRE’S 4TH PRODUCTION for 2010 will be: “LIZZY, DARCY AND JANE” by Joanna Norland Directed by Susan Lynch Does the author direct her characters’ destinies... or is it the other way around? Fremantle’s Harbour Theatre is giving audiences the chance to find out how and what influenced Jane Austen to write one the greatest novels of our time “Pride and Prejudice”. Written by Joanna Norland in 2005 it was first produced at the Bath Jane Austen Festival in September, 2006, under the title Jane Austen Makes a Match. A revised version of the script was produced by the C Company at the Tabard Theatre, London, in January, 2008. Kathryn Eastman of the Jane Austen Society said at the time that this play “...successfully fuses aspects of Jane Austen's real life with the creation of her best-loved novel, Pride and Prejudice...lively, humourous and entertaining...” Award-winning director Susan Lynch of Bateman has taken on the challenge of mounting Harbour Theatre’s production which takes a playful look at Jane Austen during the time she first started putting together her ideas for “Pride and Prejudice”. While she is living her own life – falling in love, experiencing the highs and lows of life, she creates the characters in her mind. “We get to meet the classic Austen characters like Elizabeth Bennet, Mr Darcy, Lady Catherine and Mr Collins as they might have been when she first imagined them. I am a huge fan of Jane Austen and particularly loved the 1995 BBC series so the chance to work with these characters was too good to miss.” she said. “Lizzy, Darcy and Jane offers a lovely look at familiar characters in an unfamiliar situation - a different take on an author and heroine we all think we know so well.” Award winning actors Olivia Darby of Dianella and David Bruce of Inglewood have been cast as Jane Austen and Mr Darcy with Jennifer O’Meara of Melville as Elizabeth Bennet supported by Kate Moulder of Alfred Cove as Lady Catherine De Burgh together with a host of other talented local actors playing the oh-so familiar characters from the novel. Susan Lynch adds “Directing such a talented team of actors is deeply rewarding. The team has met head-on the challenges of playing complex characters set in a completely different world to the one in which we currently live, with extraordinarily fine results”.
