Kalamunda Dramatic Society (KADS) is presenting A Lovely Lobster Tale this May, a new romantic comedy written and directed by WA playwright Stephan Jean De Jonghe.

Set on a remote beach south of Bunbury, handsome lobster fisherman Mike has desires for the beautiful Kate, a visitor to the beach - but he's too shy to speak to her.

Reggie, the stoic beach bum, arranges their chance meeting. Passion follows an awkward start but, like the lobster, it isn't smooth going.

Mike's city friends Jackson and Helen mean to be helpful but only add to the complications. Then Kate's dad shows up.

De Jonghe says the play is an adaptation from John Gill's Lovelife of a Crayfish.

"As a playwright with original plays to my credit, it seemed absurd to contemplate adapting someone else's work," he said. "However, Lovelife of a Crayfish held a special place in my heart.

"As an emerging 21-year-old actor, I performed the young lobster fisherman featured in the story. It was my debut play and changed my life 30 years ago."

De Jonghe sought out playwright John Gill, seeking permission to adapt the play to suit current issues and values.

"It was wonderful to locate and discuss my plans with John and to present the reworked plot and characters," he said.

"The significant difference is the current regard for the environment, whereas 30 years ago the play focused on ethnic tension.

"As a director, it has been important to preserve the emotions the original play engendered in me. I have, to the best of my ability, written in characters and relationships that are different to John Gill's but will produce the same level of empathy with the audience."

The cast, the set and KADS venue will appeal to seasoned and new patrons alike, De Jonghe said.
