The Last Five Years is an emotionally powerful and intimate musical set in New York that chronicles the path of a young couple as they fall in and out of love with each other over a five year period. It explores the many everyday human flaws that get in the way after the first initial flush of passion that love brings is over as well as the sorrow of mismatched expectations.
For Jamie the story begins on the day he meets his ‘Shiksa Goddess’, but for Cathy, the story starts at the end of their relationship and this beautiful tale told only through song, with no dialogue, takes you right to the centre of the two journeys in such a heartfelt way you will be singing all the way home believing that just maybe true love could happen, if only the circumstances were right.
The New York Times has hailed the Tony award winning Jason Robert Brown as "a leading member of a new generation of composers who embody high hopes for the American musical ”. He won Drama Desk Awards for the music and the lyrics with the musical style drawing on a number of genres, including pop, jazz, classical, klezmer, latin, rock, and folk.
Funny and uplifting, the show captures some of the most heartbreaking and universally felt moments of modern romance. Tripod.com
Brown’s musical pastiches are...satirical and cleverly constructed, ranging from vintage Broadway to acoustic rock’n’roll. The Independent, UK
