Helen Brett’s Mama Said, a monologue-cabaret piece, depicts the rivalry between a mother and her daughter, Anna, (Alinta Carroll), who present a double act on the vaudeville circuit in 1950s Sydney. They live a precarious and not so respectable life. Anna has to escape the tentacles of the underworld as well as contend with the jealousy of her mother, who sees her daughter’s looks and talents eclipsing her own. Anna’s life is transformed when she meets a silent accordionist, Ben (Eddie Staszak from Trio Alegra), a refugee from war torn Europe.
Threaded through this drama are classic songs including La Vie en Rose, Autumn Leaves, Mi Lord and the famous Marlene Dietrich song, Lili Marlene.
Direction by Jenny Davis; Musical Direction Tim Cunniffe
