Doug and Diana Delight Australian guitar great, Doug de Vries, unites with the enchanting jazz vocalist, Diana Clark and expert piano accordion player, Stephen Grant, in concert at Don Russell Performing Arts Centre on Friday 28 August at 8pm. The concert is a unique opportunity to see this gifted trio visit The Don as a part of a fleeting WA tour, which includes just one other metropolitan performance. Grammy-award nominated De Vries is among the nation’s foremost and versatile jazz guitarists as well as a leading exponent of Brazilian guitar. Clark is a multi-award-winning singer with a beguiling voice who beautifully interprets a rich repertoire of songs. Whether it is a haunting ballad, a samba, or the blues sung in Portuguese, her distinctly sonorous and soulful alto voice is delicately interwoven with De Vries’ hypnotic guitar. She has been described as having “k.d. lang's poise and Nina Simone's depth”. Master guitarist de Vries has a diverse musical career spanning 30 years. He is exceptional performer, renown for his virtuosity, who excels in genres spanning jazz, tango, chorinho – popular Brazilian music - and bossa nova. His sophisticated and subtle accompaniments, combined with daring improvisations, earned him the Australian Critics Award for best guitarist in 1991. He was nominated for Grammy award for his part in 'Live Down Under', a recording by American jazz/blues artist, Barbara Morrison. Versatility and understatement are the hallmarks of consummate multi-instrumentalist Stephen Grant. He is equally adept on trumpet, cornet, trombone, saxophone, piano, bass, guitar, banjo & accordion. Grant has played at festivals throughout Australia and toured in Europe numerous times with a variety of groups sch as The Hoodangers. For bookings and information call The Don on 9493 4577 or visit www.gosnells.wa.gov.au and click on the Don Russell Performing Arts Centre link to buy tickets online. “When you can sing in Portuguese, count Nina Simone and k.d lang as influences, and are backed by Doug de Vries on guitar it’s hard to go wrong. It also helps that Diana Clark has an amazing voice.” The AGE - Melbourne “Doug de Vries has long been revered for his magical playing and willingness & determination to explore new sounds and styles… His artistry is eloquent, joyous and exuberant…” Herald Sun [Melbourne].
