“Age cannot wither her, nor custom stale her infinite variety”
On December 8th 1660 a woman appeared as Desdemona in Othello, becoming the first professional actress on the London stage. What happened next would have had Shakespeare rolling in his grave.
Her Infinite Variety is a fun piece of theatre which explores the impact and influence that the first women on the stage had and how they changed the way Shakespeare was performed forever.
“It’s hard to believe” says creator Melissa Merchant “but during the late 1600s and through to the early 1900s, Shakespeare was re-written to suit the audiences of the times.”
“We live in an era where Shakespeare is seen as untouchable, an age of Bardolatry. It’s difficult for us to imagine this systematic reworking of his plays, many of which did not appear unaltered on the stage for two hundred years.”
It asks, and seeks to answer, the question "what would Shakespeare have said?"
Starring Sherryl Spencer (Picasso's Women), Phil Mackenzie (The Birthday Party), Wade Ellis (Beauty & the Beast), Martin Lindsay (Brown Acid), Murray Jackson (The Return), Sarah Isaacson (Romeo & Juliet), Murali Pillai (A Midsummer Night's Dream), Andrew Koscic (Infinite Variety) and introducing Meghan Stasinowsky.
Performances will be on July 1st, 2nd, 3rd & 4th at 8pm at the Nexus Theatre, Murdoch University, South Street, Murdoch. Tickets are $15 Adults, $12 Concession & $10 for students. Bookings can be made at herinfinitevariety@hotmail.com or on 0403 293 969
