In this new contemporary Australian comedy, Scott, a retired Olympic Swimming champion, has just ruined his motivational speaking career by sleeping with his best mate's wife. The media and public have turned on him, and, worst of all, his motivational speaking dates have all been cancelled. What can Scott do to avoid the Centrelink queue?
His manager concocts a scheme to mend his tarnished image, involving a depressed teenager, swims in the surf and good works. Will salt water cure acne, exercise give an endorphin high and the motivator save himself? Sports stars, we can’t help loving them, warts and all.
The Role Model was the winner of the 2006 Theatrelab open award and was workshopped with internationally-renowned playwright Edward Albee at NIDA. In 2008, it was produced by The Street Theatre in Canberra and The Riverina Theatre Company in Wagga.
The Role Model is "... a winner...a comedy of crossed motivations, odd-couple moments and biting commentary on the rise and fall of sporting ‘legends.’ " (Alice Allan, Australian Stage on-line)
