JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, the original classic rock opera and multi-Tony award winning musical is coming to Hornsby RSL. Hornsby Musical Society proudly presents this groundbreaking masterpiece by the legendary writing team of Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber on the RSL stage for 7 performances only.
The show was one of the first collaborations between Rice and Webber to be performed on the professional stage and is considered one of the most popular and enduring works ever created for musical theatre and features such notable songs as Superstar, Everything's Alright and I Don't Know How to Love Him.
Set in two acts, JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR tells the story of the final seven days in the life of Jesus of Nazareth. SUPERSTAR dramatizes Jesus' entry in Jerusalem, the unrest caused by his preaching and popularity, his betrayal by Judas, the trial before Pontius Pilate, and his ultimate crucifixion. Perpetually changing the face of musical theatre JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR, will leave audiences captivated by its power.
Director Jane Stewart has chosen to approach the musical in a comtemporary manner updating the settings, and creating a context that will give relevance to a new younger audience base without alienating those that know and love Superstar in its original context. In this modern day version, Jesus is an artist, Judas a corporate advertising mogul, Mary, a night club singer, and the Pharisees and priests of biblical times are portrayed as proprietors of a wealthy corporate church. Add to this a setting not dissimilar to our own Kings Cross and you have a powerful reinterpretation of a classic musical.
Says Director Jane Stewart: “When I was in New York a couple of years ago I visited the "Little Chapel that Stood" - St Paul's Chapel - the church which stands opposite the ground zero site. This church is cocooned amongst the skyscraper buildings and apart from being covered in ash when the Twin Towers fell, this chapel remained intact, not a stain glass window broke - it was considered a miracle. It became a haven and offered shelter, food and rest to the rescue workers who did such an amazing job during the 9/11 tragedy. I really wanted to re-create such a haven through the set on stage where the needy people of city life could come (a real cross section of the community) and meet with Jesus. A place where people are accepted, with no judgment, no matter what your background or past.”
"Help to the poor, no one was ever turned from its door. An immigrant's refuge, a sojourner's peace, where hope is born and sorrows cease." The Little Chapel that Stood
