The John Lennon Play: In His Own Write
By John Lennon and Victor Spinetti
Directed by Fleur Kilpatrick
1950. Liverpool. It's time for John Lennon to grow up.
With a family who do little more than drink tea, in an oppressively mundane world, Lennon's imagination runs wild; over-powering his dismal post-war surroundings and shaping them to his own fantastical version of reality. He creates distortions of the everyday, encountering other-worldly creatures and places; Elepoon Pill in the jumble, Old Buncle Ron Gobble in the underpants and his fat, electrically operated budgie named Jeffrey. If only his parents could see he was destined to become more than a factory worker…
"I was bored when
IBelieve the nasties were
Still booming us led by
Madolf Heatlump (who only
Had one)
Anyway they didn’t get me…"
TheJohn Lennon Play: In His Own Write was adapted by John Lennon and Victor Spinetti from Lennon’s poetic compilations “In His Own Write” and “A Spaniard in the Works” and is a moving tribute to childhood, the imagination and to the mind of a brilliant and enigmatic artist. In an interview held in conjunction with the opening in 1968, Spinetti said of the play, "it’s not really John’s childhood, it’s all of ours really, isn’t it John?" to which Lennon replied in a camp voice, "it is, we’re all one Victor, we’re all one aren‘t we. I mean ‘what’s going on?"
Fleur Kilpatrick directs this theatrical debut of art collective TeamHyphenPants, imagining a vibrant and colourful world. She uses a mischievous and versatile cast to play on the fantasies and poetry of one of the world's most creative minds.Part of Melbourne's Fringe Festival 2008, e John Lennon Play: In His Own Write, is set to be one of the year’s most playful theatrical offerings!
