World Music Spectacle at The Don
Amazing musicianship and captivating compositions are the hallmarks of the impressive world music quartet Mukti, who perform for one night only at Don Russell Performing Arts Centre on Saturday 20 September at 8pm.
Its music crosses oceans and merges styles. Among its array of sounds are Indian rhythms, Jazz-infused chords, Spanish flair and an occasional western lilt.
“One of the most exciting bands to emerge from the Perth world/roots scene in years,” is how the Fairbridge Festival artistic director views the group.
Performances at Queensland’s iconic Woodford Festival and at India’s Fireflies Festival have cemented the growing reputation of this exemplary group of musicians. Further exposure at Perth’s leading world music venue Kulcha, at Fairbridge and during a tour of south-west WA is spreading the word.
Mukti’s line-up includes Glenn Rogers (guitar), Josh Hogan (percussion), Vicky Ramakrishnan (tabla) and Paul Wright (violin).
Rogers is an accomplished jazz/classical guitarist and composer, who has released two Latin CDs. He has performed with symphony orchestras and in major concert venues and festivals throughout Europe and Australia.
Hagan has performed as an invited soloist at national and international festivals, and played with the West Australian Symphony Orchestra and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra.
Ramakrishnan has a Masters in Performing Arts, majoring in tabla. His considerable reputation has seen him accompany many world-renowned Indian classical vocalists and musicians.
Wright studied as a child at the great Yehudi Menuhin’s specialist music school and then continued his studies at the prestigious Juilliard School of Music in New York. He combines his position as Director of String Studies at the UWA School of Music with a heavy performance schedule. His scintillating performance at The Don in February, with another group The Kashtany Duo, is still being talked about.
