For those who are unaware this year celebrates the 25th anniversary of Australia II winning the America's Cup breaking the longest winning streak in sporting history. For those unawares, the America's Cup is a yacht regatta, the most prestigious of events in sporting history. (It predates the modern Olympic Games by 45yrs.) The race attracts international attention and countries battle it out in a series of races to win the "right to compete" against the current champions. The champion race is a best of seven series. The champion yacht, Australia II yacht (now on display in the Museum and a feature piece in the performance) was funded by Alan Bond, designed by Ben Lexcen and skippered by John Bertrand. The piece looks at the atmosphere this created in Perth and in Fremantle. The late nights staying up to watch the yacht races, the lack of impact it had in America until the final race when in true Aussie style Australia II made some amazing comebacks to claim the cup. This event had profound effects all over. It made way for new developments in yacht design and for the first time in history took the America's Cup off the Americans (well they'd had it for 132yrs1) and it was all achieved by Australia and even better it was done by Western Australia! (Hey we had to do something exciting eventually) NOTE: This piece is part of the general Open Day held at the Maritime Museum, Fremantle. The day runs from 10am - 2pm and we will be performing in that time period. It is FREE The piece has been devised by the Production class and runs for approximately 15minutes. WHEN: SEPT 28th SUNDAY
