Into The Woods

Into the Woods is an award-winning musical with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by James Lapine. It debuted in San Diego at the Old Globe Theatre in 1986, and premiered on Broadway in 1987. Bernadette Peters’ performance as the Witch, and Joanna Gleason's portrayal of the Baker's Wife, brought acclaim to the production during its original Broadway run. Into the Woods won several Tony Awards, including Best Score, Best Book, and Best Actress in a Musical (Joanna Gleason). This funny and twisted fractured fairy tale begins when a childless Baker and his Wife learn they've been cursed by the Witch next door, so they embark on a quest for the special objects required to break the spell; swindling and stealing from Cinderella, Little Red Ridinghood, Rapunzel and Jack (the one who climbed the beanstalk!) Everyone's wish is granted by the end of Act One, but the consequences of their actions return to haunt them later, with disastrous results. What begins a lively irreverent fantasy in the style of “The Princess Bride” becomes a moving lesson about community responsibility and the stories we tell our children. Into the Woods is presented by Limelight Theatre Company, which has presented many multi - award winning productions, including Chicago, Stepping Out and West Side Story, as well as last year’s Australian Non – Professional Premiere of Blood Brothers. Our director Neil Goodwin, who has over 30 years of theatrical experience, as well as 10 Best Director and 4 Best Choreographer awards to his credit, brings a wealth of talent to this exciting production of Into the Woods. His outstanding direction of West Side Story for Limelight won 7 Music Theatre Guild awards, including the coveted prize for Production of the Year so we are indeed excited to have Neil at the helm of this magnificent production of Into the Woods.
