HAMLET
Having been trodden across stages all over the world, from the stone
grounds of Helsingor castle to the squalid torpor of centuries-old
English inns, from far-flung community halls to the studios of modern
universities, our own Hamlet takes an architectural ride through a
variety of Melbourne theatrical spaces... Gasworks, Williamstown Town
Hall, Montsalvat. Three very different architectural landscapes from
which to feed this new interpretation of a continually relevant tale.
Crafted in part with the choral tones of the human voice in ensemble
repertoire, and the not-so-human shapes of eccentric puppetry, our
Hamlet builds his story from body and space, and outside time. As the
ever present and much maligned underside of our stable consciousness,
Hamlet lives on in all space, and in all time. 2005 is but a name we
give to this story's reading, this time.
In the last three years Dancing With Strangers has grown to become one
of Melbourne's most prominent independent theatre companies, producing
ten professional productions, including numerous original works, and
giving support to hundreds of emerging Australian writers, directors,
producers, designers and actors.
