"A terrorist is not only one who carries a bomb or pistol, but also one who spreads ideas contrary to Western Christian civilisation"
General Jorge Videla

In March 1976 the commanders in chief of Argentina's armed forces installed themselves as the supreme power in the country. Between 1976 and 1977 an estimated 20 000 people disappeared.

Against this back drop came the formation of Teatro Abierto, a creation by a large group of writers who wanted to demonstrate the existence and vitality of Argentinean theatre. Despite overt resistance from the government, who burnt down Teatro Abierto's first theatre after a week of it's first sell out season, it thrived and produced four seasons of one act plays. All of which were advertised word of mouth and all of which sold out.

The three plays that make up I have no mouth were written as part of the Teatro Abierto ('Open Theatre'), these plays having been performed in English only once before. The plays range from the absurd to the naturalistic, all painting a picture of the writers feelings on the social situation they found themselves in, who in their words wanted to display "the only homage we know how to make to a country with which we are painfully in love".

Although these plays were produced in circumstances unimaginable for most of us in Australia, they deal with political and emotional situations that have a resonance far beyond their original context.

Directed by David Ryding and staring Ian Bolgia, Mike Frencham and Lucy Waldron-Brown
