About the play
Hollow Crossing is not in general terms, a play. It is a live experience; a very real and frightening glimpse into the mind of a methodical and deliberate serial killer who takes ultimate pleasure in the power of holding another person’s life in his hands. It does not offer hope… it is not for the faint of heart.
Hollow Crossing is a place with a history of disappearance since it’s unofficial abandonment in the late 60s after an accident. In the last 10 years, the place has become an attraction for paranormal enthusiasts and teenage thrill-seekers, curious to know what lies on the other side of the crossing. Clifford Waters is a journalist for the supernatural magazine Undercover, Virginia is a photojournalist new to the magazine, they report the stories from the curious few who visit the mysterious town in search of the truth behind the disappearances. Late one stormy afternoon upon their return from an interview in a nearby rural town, they turn off the highway and drive into Hollow Crossing. Hollow Crossing explores the terrifying reality that Cliff and Virginia experience when they come face to face with a meticulous and patient serial killer named Sid. A sociopath who takes pleasure in the fear of others and the legend that he has created. As Sid tells his story, Cliff and Virginia play his game as they fight to escape.
About the production
This production is considered by the company an opportunity to further experiment with, and develop the form of cinematic theatre utilising a creative approach to integrating digital projection into live performance. Our technical objective is to compliment our proficiency in cinematography, post-production and animation, with imaginative use of lighting and stage design in the production.
Our concept for the stage production is to create a state of heightened realism by designing a set that allows for integrated projection, while maintaining a believable environment that reflects the harsh and confronting environment of the country.
Kitty Taube’s design is successful in doing this. The story is set is a deteriorating shed that lies on a remote and abandoned farm. Built into the rear wall of the set is a window that allows the stage characters and audience, a view to a larger shed where Sid tortures and kills his victims. Andrew Martin has used Kitty’s design to create a 3D rendering of this concept.
To further compliment this, there are pre-edited narrative sequences that intersect the 3 acts of the play and are projected onto a black scrim that will be drawn across the entire front of the set. These video sequences will give momentary distance from the immediate action while revealing Cliff and Virginia’s journey as well as an alternative version of Sid’s story. These video sequences will be treated in a similar fashion to that of the first teaser we watched previously… Andrew’s affectionately termed ‘vomit green’ colour grading will add mystique to these otherwise real video sequences.
