"Godspell"
A musical by John-Michael Tebelak,
music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz
Directed by Carolyn Latter
Assistant Director Kristen Twynam-Perkins
Musical Direction: Jacob Latter
Garrick Theatre is proud to present the rock musical Godspell, written by John-Michael Tebelak, with music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz. The first large scale musical to grace the heritage Garrick stage in four years since The Boyfriend. Garrick is thrilled to have husband and wife team, director Carolyn Latter and musical director Jacob Latter on board for this tremendous occasion.
Godspell is the archaic Old English spelling of the word gospel and literally means good news. It is an extraordinary tale of people being reborn and finding hope in the middle of a hopeless situation. Upon experiencing Godspell, patrons leave the auditorium impressed at the storytelling and the different ways that the actors portray the characters that they represent. Best of all, it shows the redemptive love of Jesus and what he was willing to do for us, whilst showing that Christ's principles have values even today.
Godspell is based on the gospel according to St Matthew, retelling the parables from those gospels. The cast of ten often use their own names to describe the teachings of Christ. Songs include "Prepare Ye", "Day By Day", and "Bless The Lord". Godspell opened off-Broadway in 1971 and then moved to glamorous Broadway itself in 1976. The original 1972 Australian cast included Colleen Hewitt and Collette Mann which helped launch their successful performing careers. At the same time the Australian Godspell soundtrack was produced by Perth born radio and television personality Johnny Young through Festival Records.
Both Carolyn and Jacob recently moved to WA from Newcastle in New South Wales. Carolyn comes from a very active theatrical family, with her Grandfather receiving an MBE in 1970 for services to theatre, so she naturally grew up with theatre being a way of life. Carolyn has been nominated and received various awards for her on stage performances, and has directed many famous musicals including Godspell, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Guys and Dolls, Me and my Girl, Oklahoma and Little Shop of Horrors to name a few.
Husband Jacob, has had various musical roles in the capacity of Musical Director, Assistant Musical Director and Conductor for shows such as Godspell, Jesus Christ Superstar, Les Miserables, Beauty and the Beast and Cabaret. Carolyn is proud to say “the family that plays together, stays together”.
Godspell is suitable for all audiences and will open at the Garrick on Friday 21st March with a four week season concluding on April 12. All shows commence at 8pm excluding Sunday matinee performances on March 23rd and 30th at 2pm.
