Monash University Academy of Performing Arts presents
The Bacchae by Euripides
Adapted and directed by Peter Oyston
Performed at Chapel Off Chapel
The Bacchae is an amazing play about a group of women, from all walks of life, who cast off the pain of drudgery and conformity. All too soon the freedoms and joys they discover are threatened by the leader of state, the authoritarian Pentheus. The clash that follows powerfully dramatizes the conflict between the emotional and the rational sides of human nature. Astutely portrayed through the characters’ display of both their masculine and feminine traits, this play is a timeless, insightful odyssey of the human psyche.
Adapted and directed by Peter Oyston, this production uses modern language, is perforated with a dark humour and references issues of contemporary society. Although written over two thousand years ago, it is as fresh and exciting as any contemporary play or film.
