Up for Grabs presents the story of Art and Money which are not the easiest of bedfellows.

The play that saw Madonna’s first acting roll on the west end will be preformed by Kwinana Theatre Workshop.

The Play by David Williamson, Deals with the contradiction of creative expression and progressive Art versus the financial gain and superficial business ethics which are the two main adversaries in the central theme.

Gains and Loss’s are not always those of the financial nature, hearts and minds also win and lose as the tale unfolds.

The Story:

Set in the international art market of the 1990’s, which was fuelled by the dot com boom, the story deals with the efforts of Simone, a young fledgling art dealer trying to sell a painting by Australian artist Brett Whitely, for a record $2 million and thereby establish herself as the “big end of town”.

This ambition turns to desperation when she signs a contract guaranteeing this price, putting both her own and her partner Gerry's assets on the line.

The game of playing everyone against each other all becomes increasingly sticky for the inexperienced Simone, who ends up compromising herself sexually, on more than one occasion. Starting out with pretensions as an art dealer of integrity, Simone abandons herself to the whims of her clients, hoping that this will clinch the deal.
