Play synopsis
Set in London in the 1950's in the height of the "debutante season",
Upper class family Jimmy and Sheila Broadbent go to London with their 17-year-old daughter, Jane, who Sheila insists on making Jane a debutante - an idea Jane loathes. Jane's apathy to being placed on the marriage block, the determined efforts of Sheila's cousin Mabel to sabotage Sheila's efforts, and an unsupportive husband who just wants his sleep, make for a laugh a minute when the very person that Sheila doesn't want Jane to be with, is in fact the only one that she is interested in.
A really nice light-hearted fast paced comedy that presents a series of misunderstandings and innuendo's, that has chunky roles for each of the cast members. Always a crowd pleaser The Reluctant Debutante has been made into a movie of the same name with Rex Harrison and Kay Kendall, and more recently adapted into the 2003 movie "What a girl Wants" with Colin Firth and Amanda Bynes.
