Plays:
"SANDCASTLES ON THE BEACH"
By John McColl and directed by Nicola Bond.
This unusual and highly original play is set in the home an elderly couple, Butter and Marge, who are anxiously awaiting the arrival of their newly-married son, Weston and his young wife, Trish. Butter, who is dying of cancer and Marge, his devoted wife have chosen unique funeral arrangements to counteract Marge's future loneliness. Soon, the pleasant nature of Weston's visit to announce Trish's pregnancy turns sour, when Marge announces - "We are going to have your dad stuffed". But this is not the only surprise in store because Marge has already decided on her husband's final resting place - a large drinks cabinet from Ikea. A bizarre tale that challenges the everyday concept of grief, making this a uniquely funny, yet poignant play.
"HENNA NIGHT"
by Amy Rosenthal and directed by Peter Kirkwood.
Judith, recently deserted by her boyfriend, is in a quandary. Should she dye her hair or slash her wrists? Either option is going make a terrible mess on the bathroom floor. A knock at the door, however, brings about an evening of deep emotion, revealing just how easily we can be betrayed by those we love. The use of subtle humour and sharp characterizations show how fraternizing with the enemy can feel like spending quality time with a friend. This wickedly perceptive, touching and witty script offers an ideal opportunity for two women to play complex and meaningful characters.
"INTERIOR DESIGNS"
By Jimmie Chinn and directed by Sherrilee Walsh.
An arrogant odd job man is offering his “services” to three lonely and frustrated women. “Services” being the operative word; Interior Designs follows Holly, Irene and Amy’s yearning to fill the drab emptiness of their lives. Ducking and weaving, the odd job man leaves each woman in the depths of despair and half finished repairs. This poignant play, full of acerbic wit, offers a deep insight into the loneliness and frustration that we feel at some stage of our lives. A deeply satisfying play for all actors.
