Drama, Passion and Humour
"Shadows of the Evening" and "Come into the Garden Maud"
These two one-act plays, set in the same hotel suite in Switzerland, were written by Noel Coward towards the end of his career. Both plays have a main cast of two women and one man and it was intended by Coward that the six parts be played by the same three actors. As a farewell to the West End stage he played the male parts himself.
"Shadows" exposes the emotions of a dying man, his wife and his mistress and could be imagined as Coward's swan-song. "Maud" points fun at the "ugly American" in Europe with a twist at the end with the hen-pecked husband gaining his revenge after 25 years of being wife-ridden. Both plays are linked by Felix the floor waiter, though , because of the time-slots within which we have set the two plays his age has to be reduced by twenty years for the second play!
