Los Chasquis

Los Chasquis in concert Latin American band Los Chasquis starts a year of diverse and quality entertainment at the Don Russell Performing Arts Centre when it performs on Saturday 24 February at the family-friendly time of 6pm. Los Chasquis is one of Perth’s most popular Latin acts, lauded for performing music from a string of countries along South America’s most imposing mountain range, The Andes. The word ‘Chasqui’ comes from the Inca language Quechua and refers to messengers stationed on royal roads in the ancient alpine civilisation. Informative insights into the rich musical heritage of Andean cultures are neatly integrated in to the two-hour show. Los Chasquis is a band of versatile musicians, which employs an array of instruments to create its lofty sounds including the quena, a bamboo flute, the zampona, a South American pan-pipe, the charango, a small stringed instrument, the bombo, a type of drum, and the guitar. Compound rhythms played on the guitar and the charango complement the haunting melodies of the wind instruments. The six piece group is comprised of Christian Quiroz (charango), Mario Horvat (guitar and bass), Freddy Poncin (percussion), Pablo Peredo (quena and pan pipes), Marco Quiroz (wind and strings) and Michael Sazdov (keyboard).
