"There's a runt in every litter One black sheep in every flock But when you know it's you Somehow your ego takes a knock..."
HONK! is the familiar story of Hans Christian Andersen's The Ugly Duckling retold with wit and charm by British song writing duo George Stiles and Anthony Drewe. The show features a motley crew of poultry and assorted animals; a squadron of comical geese, a sly, sleazy tomcat, a tearful mother, a dad constantly 'ducking' out of his responsibilities, a duo comprising a cat and a hen straight out of Shakespearean comedy, a bullfrog channeling Anthony Robbins, and an ugly duckling on a journey to find acceptance and inner beauty.
The show first opened at the Stephen Joseph Theatre in Scarborough in 1997. It went on to win an Olivier Award for Best Musical, in 2000, beating Disney's well-loved The Lion King. And now in 2006, the University of Sydney's Musical Theatre Ensemble is proud and pleased to bring you this hen-house of music and laughs; a joyful, raucous celebration of finding the courage to be yourself.
