Truvy Jones’ beauty salon in the town of Chinquapin, Louisiana is like any other beauty salon in any other town; the shampoo and free advise are dispensed in equal helpings.
In MATES Theatre Society’s current production of ‘Steel Magnolias’ Truvy’s salon is the centre for life changing events concerning six Louisiana women who share a special bond of love in a truly touching and sometimes funny classic drama.
‘Steel Magnolias’ is the much loved drama written by Robert Harling that is popular for its gritty, raw emotions the impact of which is companioned with some delightful touches of comedy.
Bringing the story to life is a strong, well balanced, all-female cast featuring familiar MATES’ performers Victoria Nicholson and Marnie Went as mother and daughter characters ‘M’lynn’ and ‘Shelby’.
Their contributions are supported by Maree Grzegolec as the town’s wealthy yet moody curmudgeon ‘Ouisser’, and Jill Todkill in the role of ‘Truvy Jones’ which was made famous by Dolly Parton in the 1989 feature film adaptation.
MATES are pleased to introduce two new performers to audiences when Elise O’Brien and Mekila Lammas make their first appearances for the group to complete the ensemble of talent which director Grahame Brown has assembled.
Elise transforms into the eccentric millionaire ‘Clairee’, and Mekila appears as Truvy’s eager new hairdressing assistant ‘Annelle’ who steps into the story as a nervous girl but develops before one’s eyes as an under current of courage and strength helps an unsure girl break out of her shell.
MATES’ theatre-restaurant environment encourages group bookings, however patrons are advised to make reservations early to avoid disappointment. A light supper is served at interval which is included in the admission price, and a licensed bar operates each night.
