A series of 10 3-hour FREE workshops conducted especially for the non-Singaporean actor / theatre practitioner. The aim of the workshops is to allow non-Singaporean students/actors to investigate, experience and understand Singapore theatre by using their existing knowledge of, and familiarity with their own political, social and cultural identities.
Participants have to look beyond the Singaporean identity as portrayed on stage (i.e. language and cultural barriers) and to explore deeper into political, social and psychological issues that are presented, and that may be similar across the cultural board, regardless of race or nationality.
Workshops include reading excerpts from exemplary works by leading Singaporean playwrights; discovery of the ‘essence’ of Singapore Theatre; exploration of various theatre forms using Singapore scripts e.g. Kuo’s Lao Jiu performed as an Artaudian theatre); and exploration of various scripts using Singapore Theatre form (e.g. Macbeth performed as a Singapore Chinese Opera).
The workshops will cumulate with observation and/or participation in a production of Kuo Pao Kun’s monologues, “KUOTATIONS: A DOUBLE BILL” on 26 to 29 October at the Pendopo Peace Pavilion in Murdoch University.
