"The Golden Age" A story of personal struggle, social limitations, and most of all love

One of Nowra’s great theatrical achievements, “The Golden Age” is a haunting play, inspired by a true story of a clan, lost left-overs of the Australian 1850’s gold rush. These people were discovered in the wilds of Tasmania in 1939. Frozen in time and steeped in self made traditions, they face the challenge of modern societal expectations, biases, and constraints. Confronted with the clan’s primitive childlike views, their modern counterparts face restrictions of their own. This grim tragedy is the basis for what is surely Louis Nowra’s most accomplished play, which blends poetic language, Australian folklore, historical fact, and Greek mythology into one ambitious work. Two bushwalkers Francis (Ryan Lee) and Peter (Trent Gardiner) first discover the lost tribe deep in the wilderness, described as ‘one of the most unexplored regions on earth’. It is their presence amongst the colony that convinces the Matriarch Ayre (Jenny Sullivan) to abandon the wilderness of exile and rejoin civilization. The cast also includes Solange Fauvet, Rebecca Greensill, Rodney Stewart, Lachlan McWilliam, Anastassia Yanatchkova, John Pace, Janelle Merry and Rebecca Butler. The Golden Age will be playing for eight performances from Friday July 14th – Saturday July 29th, at St Andrews Uniting Church Hall on the corner of Kenneth and Christina Streets, Longueville.
