Madonna admits the secrets of her success. The obscure Metrosexual Community Church finally comes out of the closet. And William FinnÂ’s bag lady speaks - well singsÂ… in Andrew ThrelfallÂ’s new cabaret Out On A Limb, which plays at Kabarett Voltaire from April 2-4 after its sellout premiere at MelbourneÂ’s Midsumma Festival.

Out On A Limb brings together the work of some of the last century’s greatest gay composers and the odd gay icon or two in a light-hearted look at life, love and fantastic hair. “It’s all the songs that were too silly, too obscure or just too gay for your average cabaret," says writer/performer Andrew Threlfall, “brought together into an outreach project gone completely insane. It’s camp, it’s silly… and it’s a lot of fun!” The show features work from everyone from Stephen Sondheim to Kylie Minogue, running the gamut of styles from musical theatre to modern pop.

Out On A Limb follows the success of 25-year-old Threlfall’s cabaret debut The Boy Who Knew Everything, a one-man show about growing up as a gay geek, and Significant Others, a show about love and family featuring Threlfall and a large white teddy bear. Critical response to Threlfall’s work and Out On A Limb has been positive, with Melbourne’s MCV newspaper praising Threlfall’s “Charismatic narrative, exceptional voice and intrinsic sense of humour” and The Age saying “Threlfall… hits the mark again. Slick, well sung and acted…” Threlfall has also appeared in cabaret for the Sydney Theatre Company and the Griffin Theatre Company, as well as having a wide range of credits as an actor/singer/dancer.

ThrelfallÂ’s Musical Director and collaborator on Out On A Limb is Green Room Award winner Nigel Ubrihien, who has directed cabaret artists including David Campbell and Kane Alexander and is also known for his work with award winning comedy trio Friends of Barbra. Nigel is also a highly sought after Musical Director, with credits including the Australian premieres of The World Goes Â’Round and Lucky Stiff.

And what is the secret of Madonna’s success? Threlfall laughs. “You’ll just have to come and see it to find out…” he says.
