Once upon a timeÂ…

Â….it didn't end happily ever after.

How’s a girl meant to come to terms with the fact that the whole fairytale myth - the godmother, the Prince Charming, the overnight transformation from ugly duckling to beautiful swan – was just a cruel hoax?
Damn it.
What a rip off.
And what are the issues facing a young woman these days?
WeÂ’re meant to be worrying about the big ones: body image, date rape and career equality, but could it be that weÂ’re just as concerned with the little stuff?
Like, what do you say to the guy whoÂ’s just turned you down?
And, how do you tell your mum youÂ’re NOT having sex yet?
And do you pretend you like the OC so your friends donÂ’t think you think youÂ’re smarter than them?

Fairytales on Thin Ice has been written and will be directed by exciting comedienne extraordinaire, Claire Hooper, following a series of intensive workshops with the WA Youth Theatre CompanyÂ’s female members earlier this year. Lots of laughter and emerging friendships helped to explore the many issues facing girls and young women from 11 to 26 years old.

The WA Youth Theatre Co acts as a mentoring organisation to assist young people to create an original work each year. This is our companion project to our boyÂ’s work, The Daedalus Project, that was shown as a work in progress at the Perth Institute of Contemporary Arts in September 2004. Claire is being mentored by writer Susan Maushart and director Jenny Davis for this project. It has been funded through a grant received from the Government of Western Australia through ArtsWA.

This will be a night of laughter as a team of 27 gorgeous, talented young women present their stories. And itÂ’s not just for the girls! Boys will love this show too!
