Nancy and Val have worked for many years in a "wharfies" pub in North Fremantle. It may not seem much of a job to outsiders, but they enjoy the company of their regulars, and they need the money. Their friendship has grown over the years from suspicion to acceptance to affection.
Their comfortable situation changes to fear for their job with the arrival of Marcus and The Syndicate, who have taken over the pub and want to put on younger staff and renovate it.
Audiences will be invited to participate in karaoke singing; beer drinking and trophy presentation as if they were present at the bar.
Barmaids engages on many levels, humour, cheek, pathos as we watch Nancy and Val rule the bar wickedly, role model their customers and sing like the finalist of Aussie Idol.
The play is directed and produced by Terry and George Hackett who have won the ITA Finley Award twice for their direction and once for their acting. They have also won Best Production at the annual one-act DramaFest. The cast are Lucy Eyre as the floating, flirty, optimistic divorcee, Nancy; and Shirley Welch as the stern, no-nonsense hard-up single mother, Val. These two fine actresses turn in performances that should not be missed. This production is ideal for Christmas break-up parties and will be the hottest ticket in town.
