In a brothel that caters for fantasies of power, Madam Irma presides over the scripted 'games' of working-class participants who take on the roles of power figures, such as a bishop, a judge, a general. 'Outside,' a revolution is in progress, and the Chief of Police, and the Queen's Envoy, must convince these brothel 'performers' to assume their roles in the 'real' world in an attempt to crush the revolution. Genet's play deals with power, and the boundaries between artifice and authenticity, illusion and reality. What is 'real' in this theatrical world? This production brings the most complete script of Genet's play, incorporating scenes rarely performed in previous productions.
