Onna no Honour

by Scott Bevan

Life can be so fukoohei!

Len Anderson is a young Australian banker who knows what he likes. For one thing he likes his fish cooked – with chips. Which is why he wanted the London posting. Instead, he got Tokyo. And now he’s got a lot more than he bargained for.

Len is a raw fish out of water. And heÂ’s floundering. He doesnÂ’t understand Japan, its language, customs, or its people. And he especially doesnÂ’t get the women, or onna, to use the Japanese word. He has a lot to learn about onna. And, as his starchy colleague Ryuichi tells him, he has even more to learn about honour. You need one to get the other. But which one comes first? And is the answer really to be found in a karaoke bar?

Written by television journalist and author Scott Bevan as his “love letter to Japan” after a period living in Tokyo, Onna No Honour is a comedy that peels the mask off relations between men and women, between East and West, between imagination and reality. It is a plea to never judge people by appearances. And it’s a warning to never, ever attempt karaoke before drinking.

Directed by Kym Weatherley, Onna No Honour features an extraordinary cast: Kengo Hasuo, Yutaka Izumihara (soon to be seen in the Hollywood World War 2 film The Great Raid), Peter Rasmussen and Tania Yuki. The production also incorporates the koto, a traditional Japanese musical instrument, played live on stage by Shoko Oono.

Onna No Honour... life can be so fukoohei... but it can be so much fun too!

ABC Radio theatre reviewer Nigel Munro-Wallace rated Onna No Honour in the top five productions of 2002 in Brisbane: “We’re getting close to the top end of my Richter scale here. I loved it, I laughed a lot. I think it’s going to go places, this play!”
