Frank Wedekind wrote Spring Awakening in 1890, when he was only 26. It was first performed in Max ReinhardtÂ’s celebrated production in 1906 at the Kammerspiele in Berlin, and stayed in the repertoire for 20 years.

Spring Awakening is partly about the misuse of authority. The adults are dangerous. They destroy or brutalise their children. The play becomes more relevant as our armies get stronger, our schools, prisons and bombs bigger, our means of imposing discipline themselves more disciplined and more veiled, and our self-knowledge not much greater. The aim of the education system shown in this play is to stop asking questions. ThatÂ’s also the foundation of the consumer society. Consume, and donÂ’t ask what or where or why or anything at all except for moreÂ….
Time is no longer a benign old man with a white beard, a staff and a lantern. It is a crying child tugging at our sleeve and asking to be carried.

Edward Bond

NOTE: there is also a 5pm show on Saturday 10th May 2003
