Set in the dystopia of a toxic swamp Nowingi, circa 2080slash81 is a contemporary dance piece in response to the State GovernmentÂ’s proposal to establish a toxic waste dump in Hattah-Nowingi, forty kilometers from Mildura in the stateÂ’s north-west.
In this fictionalised ‘not-too-distant-future’ pollution has consumed the unforgiving land leaving little life besides these personified mutated figures; shapes that resemble the human form but distorted, transfigured and permeating a vicious gracefulness. An ensemble of six dancers carves through the space using a cubist and intensely physical movement vocabulary as they enact the surviving creatures.
